September Acorn Collection

2nd Sep 2025

This year we have been approached by Derry City and Strabane District Council to take part in their September Acorn Hunt.

Every citizen who registers a Birth, Death, Marriage or Civil Partnership with the Registrar will receive a small sapling which they can plant.

For this to happen, the council needs lots of acorn seeds which they plant in their nursery and help them grown. Once they have become saplings, they are able to gift them.

We are giving out small collection bags (1 per family) for you to go on your own Acorn Hunt and collect as many as you can.

Please read the attached guide with information and we would like to highlight the safety advice.

  1. Pick a day that isn’t too windy! Falling acorns and branches can be dangerous.
  2. If you’re not sure, don’t pick it up!
  3. Mind your step! Look out for trip hazards or stinging nettles, briars and other plants that could hurt you.

This is a great chance to go out for a walk and take in the beautiful nature our city has to offer. Once you’ve been on your hunt, please return the bags to school. It doesn’t matter if you collect 1 or 100. Every acorn helps!

Please return these by Tuesday 15th September so we can arrange for the council to collect them from the school.
