VE Day

8th May 2025

Today was a very important day, the 80th Anniversary of VE Day.

We came together as a community today to celebrate the sacrifices of all those who served for our freedom. Thanks to a combined project with the school, New Gate Arts and Culture Centre and the Cathedral Youth Club, we brought the school and its wider community together to remember.

The day started with a talk from Mark and Trevor who explained all about World War 2 to the children. We looked at some photos from the Fountain over the years celebrating VE Day.

Then we went back to our classes and created “evacuee cards”. We staged a mock evacuation of the school so we could imagine what it would have been like for children all those years ago. Our safe place was St Columb’s Cathedral where we held a small Act Of Remembrance. Laying flowers at the World War 2 memorial as well as hearing some of the history of the flags in the Cathedral.

After lunch, we visited the Cathedral Youth Club where the children were able to see some items that soldiers would have used during war times.

To finish our day, we had a party, just like they would have 80 years ago. The community came together, and we listened to some fantastic music and had juice and buns.

It was amazing to see the Fountain working together to remember such an important event. The sun was shining, and the atmosphere was amazing. Thank you to everyone involved in making today possible. It was a day we won’t forget for a long time!
